It goes without saying that Boston has had an absolutely terrible week. With the events that took place during the Boston Marathon, and now with a manhunt underway to find those responsible, Boston police have order all residents within the city to stay inside today. The result has been a collection of some chillingly empty cityscapes of one of the United States greatest and largest cities.

In 2010, photographer Seth Taras created a series of photographs for a worldwide marketing campaign for the History Channel with the message “Know Where You Stand.” The photographer shot photos at locations around the world where major historical events happened, and then blended old photos showing those events from the same perspective. It is a Haunting reminder of the past but also a beautiful reminder of the power of time and progress.

Computer-generated images are moving out of theaters and onto store shelves and catalog pages, thanks to software that makes it nearly impossible to distinguish the real from the photorealistic.

Encroaching upon what was once the domain of sci-fi filmmakers, product designers have started employing CGI and utilizing a program called KeyShot to give their digital models lighting effects that makes them appear to be actual items photographed in a studio or out in the wild.

You’ve likely seen KeyShot’s output, although you may not have realized it. That ultra-perfect computer image, with dead-on lighting that highlights all its critical features? The sweatsuit with the fabric that clings together where the seams stretch? The uber-clean Jeep deep in the hills on a gravely trail? All done in KeyShot, a program that enhances CAD creations to the point that they become indistinguishable from the real thing.

Ramón J. Goñi’s new film, a sombre work which explores the idea of death as a new start. Starring Ashley Smith as a troubled, jaded beauty, On New Terms is based on Deborah Garrison’s poem of the same name it. ON NEW TERMS avoids a literal narrative in order to allow viewers to project their own emotions and experiences onto the depicted scenes. Similarly, the piece also refuses to conform to a certain artistic category, combining everything from visual poetry to fashion film (thanks to some sleek A/W looks from 3.1 Philip Lim).

A beautiful short film about how Svalbard, over the course of recent history, became increasingly linked to developments in climate science, and climate change. Much of the footage was shot whilst on residency in the Arctic Circle in 2010. Svalbard is an archipelago high within the Arctic Circle. The largest of its islands is called Spitsbergen, meaning “pointed mountains.” In 1920 a treaty known as the Svalbard Act was signed by several nations recognising Norwegian sovereignty over the islands, and declaring the whole region a demilitarized zone.

The winners of the 2012 Vimeo Festival have been announced, and unlike a regular film festival, where it could be months before you get to see the films of the winners, you can watch the videos right now.
One of those winners is Symmetry, a charming look into the duality of life on Earth through small moving portraits of contrasting subjects, it was the big winner this year taking home the Lyrical subject prize and Vimeo’s $10,000 Grand Prize.
We all know by now that you don’t need a budget anymore to make an interesting piece of work (though it can certainly help). Creativity and a drive to succeed will go a long way to furthering your career and setting you on the right path.
